We all know that storage system availability is important. But did you know that nearly two out of every three system failures is caused by downtime of the data storage system and not servers or software? Continuity Software, a New York-based provider of service availability and risk management software, has published statistics on system component failures causing system downtime and data loss at major companies, showing that system uptime depends heavily on its storage system operation:\u00a0<\/p>

Which leads us straight to the demand for storage HA solutions. And while most storage system manufacturers readily explain how their HA solutions eliminate unplanned downtime, planned downtime is an equally important consideration \u00be for a business, any downtime is still downtime. Moreover, planned downtime for maintenance and upgrade can be significant: NetApp estimates the ratio of planned to unplanned downtime at 9:1. Thus, any evaluation of HA solutions should consider not just frequency of failure, but also, how efficiently storage maintenance and upgrade can be performed.<\/p>
